Call for Nominations: 2021 CAE Outstanding Book Award

The CAE Outstanding Book Award recognizes new, critical, and cutting-edge books that make a significant contribution to the anthropology of education. Books that have been published within the past two years will be considered by a four-member selection committee. Awardees will be recognized at the annual AAA meetings. No money will accompany this award.

All nominators and/or nominees must be current CAE members. Self-nominations will be accepted. Nominations should be accompanied by 3 copies of the book and a letter from the nominator (no longer than 500 words) that addresses the following: (1) relevance to the anthropology of education and the CAE mission, (2) originality, (3) potential for significant impact on the field. Nominations for books that present work with indigenous communities and communities of color or that explore topics such as anti-blackness, migration, gender and sexuality, ableism, or similar subjects are highly encouraged.

The 2021 George and Louise Spindler Award

The Council on Anthropology and Education (CAE) has established an annual award as a tribute to George and Louise Spindler in recognition of their significant and ongoing contributions to the field of educational anthropology. The purpose of this award is to honor scholars/practitioners whose achievements in educational anthropology as researchers or as practitioners have been distinguished, exemplary, and inspirational.

This award will be presented during the annual meetings of the American Anthropological Association (AAA) 2021.

To be eligible to receive the Spindler award, a candidate must excel in their contributions to educational anthropology, either as scholars or as practitioners. Their contributions must be widely recognized for having significantly advanced our knowledge of the study of educational processes, or for having significantly improved the quality of the design or delivery of educational services.

Nominations must include:
1) a letter that includes a summary of the nominee’s accomplishments and contributions,
2) the nominee’s CV.

Purpose:
Established to honor an individual in the early stages of his or her career in educational anthropology, this award is named in honor of Douglas Foley, whose critical-ethnographic scholarship on US culture, race, and inequality in schools advanced the field of educational anthropology and helped move it in the direction of social and racial justice. We seek nominations from scholars whose research reflects this tradition of critical engagement with culture and inequality, social change, and social justice in alignment with the CAE Mission.

Eligibility:

At the time of nomination, the nominee must be within 10 years after receipt of the doctoral degree and must be a member of the Council of Anthropology & Education. Priority will go to applicants who have attended and presented at the annual meeting of the American Anthropological Association and/or been active with the AAA/CAE community in alternative ways.

Nominations must include the following:

– A letter of self-nomination explaining why this nominee is qualified to be recognized in this manner regarding sustained research and impact in educational anthropology (no more than 3 pages);
– The nominee’s most recent curriculum vitae (no more than 3 pages);
– One representative scholarly publication by the nominee within the last 2 years

The Council on Anthropology and Education (CAE) has established an annual award to recognize the author of an outstanding dissertation recently completed in the field of anthropology and education. It is named after esteemed educational anthropologist, Frederick Erickson, Professor Emeritus, UCLA GSEIS.

Nomination
Any member of CAE in good standing can nominate a recently completed dissertation for this award.

Eligibility
A nominated dissertation should have been successfully defended no earlier than 3 calendar years prior to the year in which it is nominated.

Nomination Materials
Google Survey will ask for:
1. Nominee’s name, email address, and current role/position
2. Nominee’s dissertation title, institution from which nominee received the Ph.D., dissertation chair(s), and year degree was conferred
3. Nominator’s name, title/position, institution, and email address
4. Upload a 15-20-page (5,000 words maximum) abstract of the dissertation written by the nominee that includes (in whatever format is most appropriate for the dissertation) the researcher’s positionality/relation to the work, an overview of the methods, description of major findings, and implications/conclusions, including an articulation of the work’s contributions to the field of educational anthropology;
5. Upload a letter (3 pages maximum), from the nominator summarizing the strengths of the dissertation, including the strength of anthropological theory and method, scholarly excellence, the relevance to educational anthropology, innovative or insightful approaches, and implications for research and practice in the field of educational anthropology;

Evaluation Guidelines
The dissertation award committee will be guided by such considerations as:
1. The issue addressed in the study bridges the theories and practices of anthropology and education;
2. The author-researcher applies anthropological methods and concepts in handling and reporting data thoroughly and insightfully; and
3. The study is of high quality and makes an important contribution to the field.

Finalists
A shortlist of finalists will be selected over the summer. Finalists will be asked to submit copies of their completed dissertation within 2 weeks of notification. The winner will be selected from among the finalists on the basis of a reading of the completed dissertation by all members of the award committee.

Call for Applications: CAE Concha Delgado Gaitán Presidential Fellows Program

The Council on Anthropology and Education (CAE), a section of the American Anthropological Association (AAA), is pleased to announce the eleventh year of the CAE Concha Delgado Gaitán Presidential Fellows Program. This endowed fellowship program supports the professional development and mentoring of educational anthropologists early in their academic careers.

Up to eight fellowships will be awarded for the 2020-21 academic year. Each fellowship includes:

1.   The establishment of mentoring relationship with a senior scholar in the field of educational anthropology, including virtual meetings during the CAE meetings in November 2020.

2.   Participation in a professional learning community with the new cohort and previous presidential fellows and mentors.

3.   A travel grant to support attendance at the November 2021 American Anthropological Association Meetings.

Eligibility: Educational anthropologists who have completed their doctoral degrees by August 2020 and no earlier than 2017. International scholars are welcomed. Scholars from underrepresented groups and institutions are especially encouraged to apply.

Application Procedure: Applicants should submit the following materials in a single e-mail.

1.   Curriculum vita.

2.   Statement of no more than two single-spaced pages, specifying scholarly and professional accomplishments, goals within the field of anthropology and education, previous involvement with CAE or AAA (if any), and areas in which mentoring will be beneficial to the applicant.

3.   One letter of reference and the names of two additional referees.

4.   Names of up to three active senior scholars in the CAE community with whom the applicant would benefit from a mentoring relationship.

The Concha Delgado Gaitán CAE Presidential Fellowships support early career educational anthropologists in ways that contribute to their success within the academy or broader communities of education policy and practice. In your statement describe: What are the central concerns and questions you address in your work? How does your scholarly and professional work contribute to CAE’s mission? What would you contribute to the cohort of fellows, if you are selected, and to the larger CAE community? Think about your contributions in terms of the things you know and care about, and how you would bring those perspectives to the work. What mentoring supports do you think might help you in order to make such contributions?

Selection procedure: Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee of established CAE scholars, chaired by the immediate past-president of CAE. The review process takes into account the quality of the application, the fit between CAE’s mission and the applicant’s work, and the potential benefits of mentoring. The selection committee will seek to ensure that a broad range of interests are represented within the selected cohort.

Their contributions must be widely recognized for having significantly advanced our knowledge of the study of educational processes, or for having significantly improved the quality of the design or delivery of educational services.
